Westlake Historical Society Education Meeting with guest speaker Dr. Roy Larick
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The next Westlake Historical Society Education Meeting is Thursday October 23 @ 7:00 PM.

We will meet at the Porter Library in the Porter Room.
We are looking forward to our guest speaker Roy Larick.

Bio:
Roy Larick was raised in Euclid, graduating from Ohio University in 1972. He then spent 30 years as an archaeologist working around the globe. Dr. Larick returned home in 2001, bringing a long term perspective on change in local landscapes. He now documents natural and cultural change in ecologically sensitive places.

Dr. Larick’s Bluestone Heights addresses the weave of nature and culture at Cleveland’s sensitive places. The goal: comprehend places and the means to live more equitably with them. Bluestone Heights collaborates with local governments and non-profits to identify sensitive places and to achieve sustainable place management.

Talk Title:

Westlake’s sandstone terrace landscape: ancient shorelines, early houses, emerging greenways

Westlake lies upon several sandstone terraces subtly stepping southward from Lake Erie. As the last glacier retreated northward, terrace edges became short-lived rocky lake shorelines. For early settlers, terrace edges were easy places to quarry and to lay roads. The area’s several early settler sandstone houses lie on terrace edge roads.

Dr. Larick will present the archaeological view of Westlake’s sandstone terraces and early settler sandstone houses. He will outline how the sandstone terrace landscape can be made part of Westlake’s emerging greenways and trails.

Location:
Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Rd.
