A Bicentennial invitation: Write a letter to the future
Have you ever wondered what things will be like 100 years from now? Have you ever thought about what you might want to say to someone who will be around in 2110? Well, now you have a chance to do just that!
The Bay Village Bicentennial Committee has given all residents of Bay a chance to communicate with one special resident, one special group of residents or the entire city of residents living here 100 years from now. Residents are invited to write a letter of no more than 300 words to folks living in Bay Village in 2110.
Three letters will be selected and added to the items placed in the city’s 2010 Bicentennial Time Capsule. The capsule will be sealed December 31, 2010, with a reopening date of October 10, 2110 – just in time for Bay’s 300th birthday!
The Committee will select one letter from each of three age groups: 16 and under, 16 to 64, and 65 and over. The chosen letters will be read during the Bicentennial celebration on 10.10.10. All three of the letters will be published in the WBV Observer prior to being added to the 2010 time capsule.
Letters can be typed or handwritten in black ink only. If a letter is handwritten, which will be far more personal 100 years from now, it should include a typed copy for readability. Both copies will be included in the capsule. This is a fantastic opportunity to write and communicate whatever is on your mind to folks not yet born!
Residents have until July 10, 2010 to postmark and mail their 300 word message to: Letters to the Future, P.O. Box 40187, Bay Village, OH 44140-1306. Only one letter per resident will be accepted. Include your name, address and phone number, along with your date of birth. All letters become the property of the Bay Village Bicentennial Committee and may be published or displayed as the Committee sees fit.
So pause a while, think hard about your message, pick up a pen – black ink, of course – and write that letter to the future. Remember, only 300 words are allowed! Groups mailing multiple letters are asked to package them in one envelope to ease the postman’s burden. Good luck and Happy 10.10.10.
