Westlake Porter Public Library's February calendar

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s February, 2010 Calendar of Events.

Monday, February 1 (3:30-4 p.m.), Friday, February 19 (10:30-11 a.m.), Wednesday, February 24 (10:30-11 a.m.), Wednesday, March 3 (10:30-11 a.m.), Wednesday, March 10 (7-7:30 p.m.), Friday, March 19 (10:30 - 11 a.m.) and Thursday, March 25 (3:30-4- p.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Join us for a fun session of singing  and dancing. For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Wednesday, February 3 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Valentine Stamps and Stationery – Kids ages 8 to 12: Make some cool cards, bookmarks or stationery to give your loved ones. Registration required, starting January 27.

Thursday, February 4 (9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.), Friday, February 5 (9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), Saturday, February 6 (9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and Sunday, February 7 (1:15-4:30 p.m.) Friends’ Annual Big Book Sale – Stretch those dollars by picking up some fabulous bargains on books, VHS videos, and much more!

Friday, February 5 (10:30-11:15 a.m.), Saturday, February 27 (10-10:45 a.m.), Friday, March 5 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) and Saturday, March 27 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age appropriate toys, songs and rhymes for ages 2-5 and their caring adults. Registration begins one week before each session.

 Friday, February 5 (7-8 p.m.)Jim Gill Returns! – The Family Room Tour is back! Get your knuckles, knees and silly-dancing toes ready for an evening concert that’s more than a show to watch - it’s an opportunity for family play! Free tickets available at the Youth services Desk starting January 29. Limit 6 per adult.

Saturday, February 6 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Teddy Bear’s Picnic – Join us for a “beary special” morning of Teddy Bear tales, activities and a simple craft. Don’t forget to bring your favorite teddy bear along! For ages 4 to 6. Please register starting January 30.

Saturday, February 6 (11-11:45 a.m.) and Saturday, March 6(11-11:45 a.m.) In Stitches Club – Share your projects, learn new stitching techniques, and more. For ages 10-13. Registration begins one week prior to each session.

Tuesday, February 9 (7 p.m.) and Tuesday, March 9 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – The February selection is The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown. The March selection is March by Geraldine Brooks.

Wednesdays, February 10, 17 and 24 and March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (4-6 p.m.) Open Play Wii – Teens: Come play Wii! We’ll feature different games every week!

Wednesday, February 10 (7-7:45 p.m.) The Purr-Fect Pet! – Does it have fur or feathers? Does it swim or fly? We love all pets and you’re invited to join us for a fun program of stories, songs and a craft. Bring your favorite stuffed “pet”! For ages 4 to 7. Please register starting February 3.

Thursday, February 11 (7 p.m.) and Thursday, March 11 (7 p.m.) Non-Fiction Book Discussion – The February selection is Wonder Crew: the Untold Story of a Coach, Navy Rowing, and Olympic Immortality by Susan Saint Sing. March’s selection is Blue Zone: Lessons for Living Longest from the People Who've Lived the Longest by Dan Buettner.

Saturday, February 13 (10 a.m.) Using Footnotes Genealogy Database – Learn how to use and access the Footnotes genealogy database for free from home! Discover naturalization documents, birth records, military records, and much more. Please register.

Saturday, February 13 (10-11:30 a.m.) We Love Dogs! – Join us for a meet and greet session with Fairview Hospital’s PAWS For Care therapy dogs. We’ll even have some great dog stories to share! Ages 5-16. Registration begins February 6.

Saturday, February 13 (1-3 p.m.) Weather You Should Know – Why is the weather fabulous one day and frightful the next? Find out at the library! We’ll talk to a local meteorologist and cloud expert, and make some cool weather crafts. For grades 3-5. This topic is on the Ohio Proficiency Exams. Please register starting February 6.

Saturday, February 13 (2-4 p.m.) Valentine’s Day Craft for Teens – Make a Valentine's Day gift for someone you love - or for yourself! We'll create custom-made, beaded heart necklaces. For teens age 12-18. Please register starting February 6.

Saturday, February 13 (2-3 p.m.), Saturday, February 20 (2-3 p.m.), Saturday, March 13 (2-3 p.m.) and Saturday, March 20 (2-3 p.m.) LEGO Club – Bring your ideas and imagination to our club! Ages 6-13. Please register one week prior to each session.

Monday, February 15 (10 a.m.) Hi-Los – The Westlake Westshore Arts Council and the Bluewater Chamber Orchestra present a concert featuring the high  and the low ends of the chamber music spectrum. Featuring Nancy Patterson on violin and Ann Gilbert on bass; directed by Carlton Woods.

 

Monday, February 15 (2-2:45 p.m.) Choc-Olympics – Join us for games, stunts and more to test your skills. Sweeet! Ages 7-10. Please register starting February 8.

Monday, February 15 (7 p.m.) Time Management for the New Year! – Nidhi Shah, Ph.D, MBA will teach you how to manage your time to increase professional and personal productivity. Please register.

Tuesday, February 16 & Tuesday, March 16 (7-8:30 p.m.) Mad4Manga – Are you mad for manga? Then take heart because the M4M Club meets the third Tuesday of every month! M4M is everything manga! We talk about manga, create manga art, discuss & watch anime films, and more! For teens in grades 6-12.

Tuesday, February 23 (10-10:30 a.m.) “Wild Things” Return to WPPL! – Join us for a “wild” storytime featuring Lake Ridge Academy’s special performance of Where the Wild Things Are. All ages welcome!

 

Tuesday, February 23 (6:45 p.m.) Fresh – Join Debbie Dean Espie in the viewing of a movie which celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are reinventing our food system.

Wednesday, February 24 (2 p.m.) and Wednesday, March 24 (2 p.m.) Afternoon Book Discussion – The February selection is Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. The March selection is Rainwater by Sandra Brown.

Friday, February 26 (10 a.m.- 12 p.m.) and Friday, March 26 (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.)

Porter’s Fiber Fanatics – Socialize, share, and solve problems with fellow needle artists while you work on your current project.

Saturday, February 27 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) SAT Practice Test – Bring a #2 pencil and calculator to take a practice SAT exam. For grades 10-12. Registration begins February 20. Sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center.

Tuesday, March 2 and March 30 (7:30 p.m.) FYI:Opera – Join the Westlake Westshore Arts council and Alan Montgomery for a presentation of Candide on March 2. The March 30 program features a discussion of “Opera Scenes” by David Bamberger from the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Wednesday, March 3 (7-7:30 p.m.) Dr. Suess Birthday Read-Aloud Party – Come share some of the coolest, wackiest children’s books around as we celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday. We’ll read your favorites!

Wednesday, March 3 (7 p.m.) Westlake WestShore Arts Council 2010 Symposium – Carla Blackmon, owner of Design Interface, will discuss industrial design.

Sunday, March 4 (2 p.m.) Sunday Sounds – Join the Friends of the Library for a program featuring The Westlake High School jazz band under the direction of Raymond Walczuk.

Thursday, March 4 (7 - 8:45 p.m.) Investor Interest Group – John Sawczak of AAII will discuss Options in this Interesting Market. Please register.

Saturday, March 6 (9:30-11:30 a.m.) SAT Results/Test-Taking Strategies – If you took the practice test on February 27, this is the time to get your results and discuss test taking strategies with mentors from Westlake’s Sylvan Learning Center. Register at the same time you register for the test.

Saturday, March 6 (2-2:45 p.m.) Fancy with Nancy! – Would you like to learn how to be as glamorous as possible AND make a posh craft? Then join Miss Nancy for special stories, refreshments and that craft! Ages 4 to 7. Registration begins February 27.

 January 11 Winter Storytimes –  The Spring session begins March 8. No registration necessary, but the Storytime room capacity is 58.

LAPSIT STORYTIME - Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (9:30 a.m.) — For children 6-24 months and their caregivers.

TODDLER STORYTIME - Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (10:15 a.m.) — For children 2-3 1/2 years old with their caregivers.

PRE-SCHOOL STORYTIME - Wednesday (10:15 a.m.) — For children 3 1/2 to 5 years old.

 

Saturday, March 13 (2-3 p.m.) Teens Talk Books – Can’t stop raving about the last book you read? Were you disappointed in your favorite author’s latest work? Let’s talk about it! Join us for an evening of books, conversation, and refreshments. For ages 12 to 18. Registration begins March 6.

Tuesday, March 23 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Teen Craft - Butt Pillows – Transform your old jeans into a stylish, yest comfy pillow! You supply the old pair of jeans, we’ll supply the rest. For ages 12-18. Registration begins March 16.

Wednesday, March 24 (7-8 p.m.) Pawsitive Readers – That super canine listener, Baby, returns to listen to your stories! For kids in grades 1-4. Please call Youth Services for one of five time slots. Wednesday, February 24 (7-8 p.m.)
