Bay Village Education Foundation awards over $12,000 in grants

Rhonda Schneider, vice president of the Bay Village Education Foundation, along with Grants Co-Chair Ellie Bricmont, awarded over $12,000 in grants to Bay educators at the Nov. 28 Board of Education Meeting. A grand total of $14,267 was awarded in partnership with Bay Village Kiwanis.

The BVEF, a non-profit organization in its 26th year, awards grant monies to support enrichment opportunities across the curriculum for Bay Village students. This year, the following educators were awarded grants:

The Bay High School library staff received $1,087 for two iPad 2’s, as well as $600 toward updating the Lois Calmus Memorial Reading Garden. As winner of the 2011 Maynard Bauer Leadership Award, BHS Principal Jason Martin also received $2,000 for “Rachel’s Challenge,” an anti-bullying program presented this fall for students at Bay High School and Bay Middle School.

Bay Middle School social studies teacher and Joseph H. Thompson Economic Award winner Matt Kralik received $2,500 for the purchase of five iPads to be utilized in enhancing the eighth-grade financial literacy curriculum; while sixth-grade math teachers Lawrence Kuh and Mark Kevesdy received $998 to purchase two iPads for use in their classrooms.

Westerly enrichment resource teacher Marian Harmount was awarded $ 2,782 for the purchase of 12 iPod Touches and accessories for use at both Westerly and BMS.

Normandy first-grade teacher Barbara Ayers and librarian Linda Noble received $1,500 for the purchase of netbooks to be utilized in both after-school internet safety/keyboarding classes and for research during the school day; and kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Shirey won the Waldron Award for Language Arts, receiving $180 to purchase CD players to encourage independent reading in her classroom.

Bay Village Kiwanis partnered with BVEF to award the following: $519 to Westerly intervention specialist Shawn Stansbury and speech and hearing specialist Maria Kaminski for a new communication software application; $1,000 to BHS Assistant Principal Aaron Ereditario in support of WINGS: Helping Adolescent Girls to Soar; and the Golden Award (supporting students with special needs) with $1,100 to BHS special education teacher/intervention specialist Rick Manderine in support of the PAL program for special needs students and their peer mentors.

The community can support the BVEF in their efforts to provide enrichment opportunities and support creativity in Bay Village schools by participating in the Ten Campaign (forms available at school offices, the Board of Education office or online at BayEdFoundation.org) and by attending the organization’s annual fundraising event, “Creating Opportunities” on Sunday, Jan. 29, at Arrabiata’s in Bay.
