Westlake Historical Society looks back, ahead

Over this past bicentennial year, it has been our goal to bring attention to the rich history of our city and its people, as well as our organization and its mission. The Westlake Historical Society celebrates 50 years, and in a manner of speaking, we are just getting started.

Some may think that a local historical society is only concerned about all things past, however those of us who are part of the Westlake Historical Society also look toward the future as well. Every day that passes, gives us the opportunity to preserve more of our history.

There are several ways we do this. First, we enjoy collecting family history sheets. These sheets in their simplest form are your individual family's story. Have you written your family history? Have you shared it with the Westlake Historical Society? We would be honored to archive your family history sheet.

Second, we have our corner-to-corner photography project. We ask members and others to help us take photos of the various streets and corners here in modern Westlake. Do you know the history of the street you live on? Would you like to? We have researchers who would like to get you started.

In 2012, we recognize the 200th anniversary of the Spanish-American War. Our historical society is pleased to have in its collection an authentic uniform worn during this decisive war.

Also, since 2012 is just around the corner, we are already gearing up for our fundraisers like the Antique Vintage & Craft Show, Rubber Duck Race, and annual yard sales. The money we raise helps to cover the utility costs of the Clague House Museum, as well as preservation materials, future acquisitions, and maintains free children's programming.

Look for our membership drive in February 2012!
