Two honored with staff excellence awards

Two Westlake Schools’ staff members were honored by their peers with staff excellence awards. The Excellence in Teaching award went to Jane Zellers, a second-grade teacher at Hilliard Elementary School. The Excellence in Classified Service award went to Debbie Lukas, an assistant custodian at Dover Elementary School.

Zellers is described by peers as an excellent problem solver who is genuine, honest and trustworthy, and who possesses a high level of productive energy.

“Her respect for every student’s talents and strengths is reflected in her students’ high academic achievement and social performance,” a co-worker wrote in a nomination letter. “Students work hard and thrive each year because she consistently creates a safe, comfortable classroom, where each student’s efforts are validated.”

Zellers, who has been with the district since 1997, participates in a variety of building committees and programs, including math and literacy nights. She also is an active participate in the school’s PTA.

Lukas, who has been with the district since 2003, is described as a dependable and conscientious hard worker.

“Her work ethic is excellent and she is always willing to help any way she can,” a colleague wrote. “Mrs. Lucas consistently demonstrates pride in her work and is always seeking new ways to improve the process.”

Award winners will have their names inscribed on a plaque to be permanently displayed at the Administration Building.
