St. Bernadette kicks off universal 'Year of Faith' Oct. 19

Marcus Grodi of EWTN will be the featured speaker at St. Bernadette's "Year of Faith" kick-off Oct. 19-20.

Pope Benedict XVI announced in his apostolic letter "Porta Fidei" ("Door of Faith") that there would be a “Year of Faith” for the universal Church to begin Oct. 11, 2012 and lasting through Nov. 24, 2013. During this year, the faithful are called to “a renewed conversion to the Lord, the one Savior of the world.” In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for people to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus, rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.

This Year of Faith marks three momentous occasions: the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, the 20th anniversary of the release of the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" and the World Synod of Bishops for the New Evangelization taking place in Rome this October.

The last Year of Faith was in 1967, announced by Pope Paul VI. At certain times, the faithful are called to devote attention to certain aspects of their faith in this special way, such as the “Year for Priests,” “Year of St. Paul,” and “Year of the Eucharist” in more recent times.

The start celebration of this year, St. Bernadette Church in Westlake is holding an event Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20 to “Kick Off The Year Of Faith” with featured speaker Marcus Grodi from EWTN’s TV program "The Journey Home."

“We wanted to offer an opportunity for people to recognize this year and start things off in an impactful way,” says event coordinator Kent Dale. “Marcus will speak on conversion, how each of us needs this in our daily lives and barriers to conversion.”

Friday begins at 7 p.m. with a musical performance by St. Joseph Academy’s acclaimed a capella group Cecilia’s Song, followed by Marcus Grodi at 7:30. Saturday begins with 8 a.m. Mass, followed by a continental breakfast and Marcus Grodi at 9:45. Media sales and signings both days.

It is a free event, open to the public. To reserve a seat, email your name and contact information to: The parish office may be contacted with any questions: 440-734-1300.
