Bay trash collection switches back to Tuesdays, bulk pick-up also changes

The City of Bay Village will be changing its “Refuse Collection Day” from Fridays to Tuesdays beginning in December. Residents will still have their trash and recyclables picked up on Friday, Nov. 30, with weekly collections changing to Tuesdays beginning Dec. 4.

A change in the trash collection day is always a difficult transition to make since many residents fall into a routine. We feel the change from Friday to Tuesday will allow the city to provide a more efficient collection by eliminating Saturday collections on holiday weeks, and to provide our Service Department succeeding work days to coordinate with the contractor regarding missed collections, as well as notifying residents to remove any refuse not picked up due to improper placement. Tuesday collections should also eliminate any need for residents to have trash or recyclable containers on the tree lawn over the weekend.

The “Bulk Items Collection” day will also change. Bulk items will now be picked up on the last Tuesday of each month. The transition may create a small challenge for residents and the city as there will be a six-week period between the bulk pick-ups of November and December. The November pickup will be on the “old” schedule – the first week of the month, while the December bulk pickup will occur on the “new” day – the last Tuesday of each month.

We hope that residents with bulk trash will take advantage of the first December refuse pick-up on Dec. 4, taking place only three days after the Nov. 30 refuse pick-up, by placing any additional trash in their blue roll out containers for collection.

Everything else will remain the same, as far as holiday week pick-ups, rules and regulations regarding bulk items collection and scheduled pick-ups for Freon-containing appliances. Yard waste collections will end Tuesday, Dec. 11, weather permitting, and will not start up again until April 16, 2013.

One thing the city will be taking a hard look at is the enforcement of Ordinance 521.12(b) which states that residents are prohibited from placing any refuse or recyclables on the tree lawn prior to 5 p.m. on the day before collections, and establishing an ordinance requiring the removal of any trash or recyclable containers from the tree lawn area by the morning after pick-up.

Residents are encouraged to contact the Bay Village Service Department at 440-871-1221, regarding any questions about the Trash and Recyclables Collection Program.
