Andrew Mangels receives chamber service award

Andrew Mangels receives the West Shore Chamber of Commerce Hugh Dawson Award.

At the annual West Shore Chamber of Commerce December meeting/holiday party, Andrew Mangels was presented with the Hugh L. Dawson Service Award. Andrew is the Director of Westlake Porter Public Library and has been a member of the Chamber since moving to Westlake six years ago.

He also serves as co-chair of the Chamber’s Education Committee which is responsible for giving out scholarships to Westlake and Bay high schools students, bestowing an annual Student Achievement Award to an employee or volunteer of a Chamber business, and coordinating people from the business community to speak to high school students and share their career stories.

The award was presented to Mr. Mangels by last year’s recipient, Mayor Dennis Clough, along with a proclamation that began “Andrew Mangels has been one of the biggest promoters of Westlake, Cuyahoga County and Northeast Ohio you will meet.”

Through his position at Porter Library and his many volunteer activities, Andrew has been heavily involved in the Westlake community.

Porter Library is known as one of the best libraries in the country. In 2012 the library expanded services and built partnerships without increasing the budget. In order to better serve the needs of the community, the library has begun staying open later on the weekends and will be open on Sundays in the summer beginning this year.

Joining the resource sharing consortium, Search Ohio and Ohio Link, has added millions of items to the collection from public and academic libraries all over the state with just the click of a button, and a partnership with non-profit Connecting for Kids has resulted in $33,000 in grant funding from the Cleveland Foundation and Nordson Corporation for the purpose of providing programs and support for families with children who have special needs.

Andrew’s volunteer activities include serving on the board of the Westlake Baseball League and coaching girls and boys soccer, basketball, baseball and softball. He is a member of Kiwanis and coordinates Field Day for the Hilliard Elementary PTA.

After being presented the award, Mr. Mangels spoke briefly about how important community is and how he and his family have felt welcomed since their first day in Westlake and how he is “honored to receive the Hugh Dawson award and be in such good company with past recipients.”
