Shaw receives top volunteer award from Westlake Porter Public Library

Nancy Shaw accepts the Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award from Westlake Porter Public Library Board President Bob Plantz.

Friends of Porter Public Library board member Nancy Shaw has received the Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award from Westlake Porter Public Library. The Myrna Chelko Award, established in 1994, is given annually to the library volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the library in volunteer time and whose volunteer efforts have made an impact on library services. The award is named for the late Myrna Chelko, whose contributions to the library epitomized the spirit of volunteerism.

Shaw is currently the Friends board’s membership chair. She began volunteering in 2002, and joined the Friends board in 2006. Shaw also works in the Book Nook and at the annual book sale, and volunteers as a shelver and at the library’s reception desk. In 2012 she gave 158.5 hours to the library, and has served for a total of 1,842 hours.

Shaw received the award at the annual Volunteer Recognition Reception on March 3. The event honored the 190 volunteers who gave over 10,000 hours of service to the library in 2012.

“Volunteers enable us to provide services to the community that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “We cannot thank them enough for their dedication and community spirit.”
