Bay Bike To School Challenge rolls on May 6

It’s that time of year again, when hundreds of bicycles will be rolling throughout Bay Village.

Bay Bike To School Challenge is returning for its sixth year on May 6-24 at Bay's middle and high schools. The award-winning program motivates students to ride their bikes as much as possible for three weeks and establish a habit of bicycling – to help the environment, improve their health and academic performance, inspire their parents and community, and have fun.

The more they bike, the more students can win great daily and grand prizes from local and national sponsors of Bike To School Challenge (BTS). Here is a list of important dates in the Bay program, including the special prizes they can win for bicycling on that day:

  • May 6: Bay BTS begins; free BOGO sub from Subway of Bay Village; Raleigh Bike To School Challenge Scholarship applications from BHS seniors are due.
  • May 8: National Bike to School Day; free water bottle from Raleigh Bicycles.
  • May 14: Free sticker from Century Cycles.
  • May 16: Free after-school ice cream from Honey Hut at Bay High School.
  • May 17: Free after-school ice cream from Honey Hut at Bay Middle School.
  • May 20: Bike To School Week at Westerly, with daily prizes for their students.
  • May 21: Free BOGO bowling from Bay Lanes.
  • May 22: Free sticker from Bike Cleveland.
  • May 24: 1,000 Bikes In Bay Day (all are invited to ride with the students); free sticker from People For Bikes
  • Ride just four days and redeem a BTS Ride Card for a free BTS t-shirt from Century Cycles, redeemable at each school.

In addition to daily prizes, every bike ride gets students closer to winning grand prizes, including two new Raleigh bicycles from Century Cycles per school. Raleigh Bicycles is also providing a $1,000 college scholarship for a Bay senior, $500 awards for each school that exceeds its bicycling goal for the program (Bay Middle School has announced its goal is 700 riders on one day!), and a $1,000 grant to the City of Bay Village, in recognition of its support of Bay Bike to School Challenge and to help with a bicycling-related initiative in the city.
