Thursday, August 1-Saturday, August 17 – Westlake-Westshore Arts Council’s Juried Art Show – Please visit the Porter Library art gallery in the meeting room wing to view the juried art show from The Westlake-Westshore Arts Council.

Thursday, August 1 (7-7:45 p.m.) Sweet Wall Art – Create some cool art with hard candies! We'll be gluing them on to pre-set designs to make decorative prints. Grades 4-7.

Thursday, August 1 (7-8:30 p.m.) Almost Guiltless Desserts – Join Susan Aldrich for tasting and recipes for almost guiltless desserts. Please register.

Saturday, August 3 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose on the Loose! – Join Mother Goose for this interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with adult caregiver. No registration.

Saturday, August 3 (3-5 p.m.) Mad4Manga – Do you love Manga, Anime or Japanese culture? If you do, this club is for you! Each month we watch a different Anime series and talk about our favorite Manga. Sometimes we even throw in some crafts, Manga drawing or Japanese treats just for fun! Grades 6-12 only. Registration not necessary.

Monday, August 5 and Wednesday, August 7 (2-4 p.m.) Who's Living in my Backyard? – Join us for experiments, games, crafts, songs and stories to discover the diversity of life in your own backyard. This two-session series is designed to increase scientific literacy. Grades 2 and 3. Register one time for both sessions, beginning July 29.

Tuesday, August 6 (10 a.m.-noon) Results-Oriented Resumes – When you are looking for a job, you become a salesperson, selling yourself to your next employer. Your principal “sales tool” will be a well-designed, targeted resume. In the current job market, competition is tough and employers are swamped with resumes for each position they post. This workshop will teach you what will catch the employers’ attention and make them want to interview you.

Tuesday, August 6 (2-2:45 p.m.) The Wonderful World of Bubbles – Join The Bubble Lady for an afternoon of science fun as we explore The Wonderful World of Bubbles. Free tickets will be available in the Youth Services Department starting July 30.

Tuesday, August 6 (4-5 p.m.) Cosmetic Science – Join Barb Cashmere, former chemist at Bonne Bell, as she tells us all about the science that goes into making some of your favorite make-up products. You'll even do some mixing and go home with your own homemade cosmetic! Grades 6-12.

Tuesday, August 6 (7-8 p.m.) It's a Robot Storytime! – All systems are GO! Clink, beep or creak on over to hear out-of-this-world stories about robots, sing songs, play games and make a stellar craft! Ages 4-7. Registration begins July 30.

Wednesday, August 7 (10:15-10:45 a.m. or 11-11:30 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Join us for a fun session of singing and dancing for children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Space is limited, so please arrive early enough to receive a ticket at the Preschool Desk.

Wednesday, August 7 (2-4 p.m.) Solar Cooking – We'll use recycled materials to make an oven that cooks with the power of the sun! You'll even get to make some treats in your oven! Grades 4-8.

Wednesday, August 7 (7-8:30 p.m.) Introduction to Finding Funders – Learn how to use Foundation Directory Online, the database in which you can search to find funders for your nonprofit organization. Please register.

Thursday, August 8 (10 a.m.-noon) Daytime Astronomy – View the Sun through a solar-safe telescope. With luck, Earth's Moon will also be visible. Telescope(s) will be set up on the sidewalk not far from the library's main entrance. Cloudy skies will cancel this outdoor event.

Thursday, August 8 (7 p.m.) Non-Fiction Book Discussion – The August selection is "Born to Rise" by Deborah Kenny.

Friday, August 9 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys, songs and rhymes. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, August 9 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) iPad Users Group – Share easy tips with other iPad users. Please bring your iPad with you. Please register.

Friday, August 9 (7-7:45 p.m.) Thomas Alva Edison – Join us for an evening with the famed inventor, and get a look at his early chemistry experiments and those leading to some of his most famous inventions. All ages.

Tuesday, August 13 (10 a.m.-noon) Improving Interviewing Skills – Preparation is the essential ingredient for a successful job interview. It starts with research to be sure the job is right for you and that you are well qualified, learning as much as possible about the company and the job, and then preparing to answer difficult and probing questions. Come and learn to discover what the employer needs so that your answers will differentiate you from other candidates.

Tuesday, August 13 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – This month we’ll discuss "The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners" by Luanne Rice.

Tuesday, August 13 (7-8:45 p.m.) The Civil War in Northern Ohio – Local historian/author John Vacha will focus on life on the home front in Cleveland during the Civil War. Special focus: the role played behind the front line by women and the Soldiers Aid Society. Please register.

Thursday, August 15 (1-6 p.m.) Movies @ Your Library: Oz Marathon – We're off to see the wizard... at the library! August 15 marks the 74th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" movie premiere. Come watch the newest film, "Oz the Great and Powerful," followed by the classic "The Wizard of Oz." All films are rated PG. All ages welcome. In accordance with library policy children under age 9 must have a parent/adult guardian present. Registration begins August 8.

Monday, August 19 (6:30-7:30 p.m.) Colored Cow Creation Celebration – Celebrate the creation of the Black Cow (Root Beer Float), which occurred on August 19, 1893. Program includes history, science and taste testing of many delicious flavor combinations! Grades 1-3.Registration begins August 12.

You’ll gain information on preparing writing samples when employers request them.
