Donations sought for Bay fireworks fund

Will Bay Village have a fireworks show in 2014? The answer to that question is maybe: It will depend upon the generosity of those who enjoy the fireworks by contributing to the Community Fireworks Fund.

Bay Village Mayor Debbie Sutherland announced in 2011 that the city could no longer afford to pay for fireworks. Following that announcement, an anonymous donor stepped forward and contributed the funds through The Village Foundation for the past two years. In the future, funds will have to come from private donations given specifically for this purpose.

This special fund enables citizens to make a tax-deductible contribution to The Village Foundation specifically earmarked for the continuation of the annual fireworks display. Those that attend Bay Days and come to see the fireworks every Fourth of July that live in surrounding areas are also invited to contribute.

The community needs volunteers to form a committee to oversee the fundraising efforts. Those willing to help should call the Village Foundation phone line, 440-899-3490. Please leave your number and a detailed message. This in an unattended phone and your call will be returned.

To get the fund started, The Village Foundation granted $1,000, board members and others contributed $800, and the Bay Kiwanis Club contributed $1,000. The goal will be to raise $11,000 before March 15, 2014 in time for the city to order the materials. Ideally, donors will contribute larger sums to cover more than one year of fireworks so that the fund can grow.
This is a donor specified fund maintained by The Village Foundation. Information about the organization is available at

The City of Bay Village has offered fireworks during the Bay Days celebration for more than 50 years. The maintenance of this fund will allow the city to request a grant from the Village Foundation each year to pay for the fireworks. Hopefully, the funds will be available, thanks to residents, businesses and civic groups that raised money throughout the years for the fireworks display.

Please contribute and volunteer to help. Donations may be made to The Bay Village Community Fireworks Fund, The Village Foundation, P.O. Box 10422, Bay Village, OH 44140.
