Waiver days change Westlake school schedule

As part of the State of Ohio's initiative to encourage best practices and innovative programming, school districts working on new teaching and testing standards, as well as school safety practices, were able to apply for waiver days for the upcoming school year to provide additional time to train staff. As part of the Westlake City School District’s commitment to excellence, district administrators created a district-wide plan for staff development that focuses on targeted initiatives and areas of improvement in each building. To implement that plan, the district requested and just received approval for three waiver days, which will slightly change the upcoming school calendar.

The waiver days are: Sept. 3, 2013; Jan. 6, 2014; and Feb. 14, 2014. On these three days, school will not be in session so staff members can participate in professional development to identify and explore ways in which curriculum, assessment and programming can be appropriately blended while meeting the needs of all students. The district will share training, collaboration strategies and instructional strategies across grade levels and disciplines.

Westlake High School students will participate in a student orientation day on Tuesday, Sept. 3. WHS seniors and freshmen will attend orientation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. WHS sophomores and juniors will attend orientation from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

WHS administration will send out a mailing on Aug. 9 providing information on traffic patterns, parking, senior privilege and medical forms.

The online portal for high school schedules will be open on Aug. 28. Students can print their schedules at home and bring them to orientation on Sept. 3, or they can pick up schedules from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 at the high school. At this time the building will not be open for students to walk through until the Sept. 3 orientation day.

The first day of school for all students will be Wednesday, Sept. 4.
