Unity's small-group book study to focus on 'The I of the Storm'

For over a decade Unity Spiritual Center has held a six-week Fall Program featuring many small groups studying a special spiritual book. A very popular ongoing event, the Fall Program begins with a kick-off ceremony on Sept. 18.

This year's book is "The I of the Storm: Embracing Conflict, Creating Peace" by Dr. Gary Simmons, a renowned peacemaker, Unity minister and spiritual leader. The book is now in its 16th printing.

In "I of the Storm" we learn to go beyond merely managing the conflict in our lives to actually embracing the conflict, allowing it to teach us what we otherwise might not learn. This process leads to peacemaking whether it be within ourselves, in our relationships, or as a result of outside circumstances.

Dr. Simmons integrates spiritual principles, biblical quotes and martial arts philosophy (he is a fourth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do) as well as concepts from modern science – especially quantum theory. In this way he points us to the "I" of the storm of conflict, to our spiritual Self, as the means of realizing peace in our lives.

The magic of this book is the way Dr. Simmons, in a very practical, reality-based manner, discusses the challenges, temptations and hazards the world presents to us on a day-to-day basis that distract us from our purpose here on Earth. He provides practical techniques and strategies, both spiritually and materially based, to help us avoid these hazards allowing us to better align ourselves with our divine purpose and mission.

Topics include but are not limited to: “No One is Against You,” “The I of the Storm,” “Making Friends with Conflict,” ”The Four Winds of Conflict,” “Living on Purpose,” “The Power of Center” and “A Call to Make Peace.”
