Search for Rose candidates underway
‘Tis surely December when wee folk look skyward to catch a glimpse of Santa’s sleigh and Ohio’s “Rose Centre” amps up recruitment of eligible entrants of Irish ancestry for the Northern Ohio Rose Centre’s spring selection event.
The maiden chosen as the “2014 Ohio Rose” receives an expense-paid trip in May to The Rose of Tralee International Festival’s Regional Finals in Portlaoise, Ireland, the second tier of the search for the 2014 International Rose of Tralee.
In August the festival hosts those who qualify as finalists in Tralee where The Rose of Tralee International Festival is held amid public celebrations, parades and special events.
Locally and abroad, the Ohio Rose will have the experience of a lifetime while receiving celebrity status. Enjoying the selection process amid friendly competition provides a grand occasion for participants at every level to showcase their poise, warmth, acumen, wit and charm, all attributes reflecting their “beauty within.”
The festival is based on William Pembroke Mulchinook’s ballad “The Rose of Tralee,” a story of unrequited love between the son of wealthy parents and a young maid in their employ. The spirit of the festival embraces the essence of his attraction: “Yet 'twas not her beauty alone that won me; Oh no, 'twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning.”
The local Rose selection is the annual fundraiser for Westlake World Partners Co., the non-profit organization supporting educational, cultural and civic exchange between Westlake and its Sister Cities of Tralee, Ireland, and Kingsville, Ontario, Canada.
Those interested in learning more may visit The Rose of Tralee International Festival’s website: www.roseoftralee.ie where information specific to the Ohio Centre can be found under “Centres,” USA, Ohio.
