Summer fun starts at Porter Library

Are your children or grandchildren looking for something to do this summer? Are you? Look no further than Westlake Porter Public Library! The library is offering fun and educational programs through its annual Summer Reading Program, Summer Brain Games and Science Week. Here’s what you can expect from each:

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Dates: June 16-July 26

Description: The annual Summer Reading Program encourages reading by all ages with prizes for a specific number of books or hours read. The more you read, the more chances you have to win! In addition, the library offers fun and educational programs for all ages keyed to the theme for the year. This year’s themes are “Fizz! Boom! Read!” for kids and “Literary Elements” for adults, so there are a variety of science-oriented programs planned. Kids can stop by the library to register and adults can stop by or register online through the online calendar: signup.westlakelibrary.org:8080. You can also view and register for programs there.

SUMMER BRAIN GAMES

Dates: June 24-July 24

Description: WPPL and Westlake City Schools are once again partnering on a two-part program: Book Buddies and Brain Games. Book Buddies will take place on Tuesdays from 2:30-3 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:30-11 a.m. Teen volunteers will help students ENTERING grades 1-3 retain their reading skills during summer vacation. This program is designed for those usually reading below grade level and in need of extra help practicing reading. Please note: the Book Buddies program is not a tutoring service. Teen Book Buddy volunteers are neither expected nor trained to correct learning problems or to teach children to read. Sign up weekly for the session that works best for you.

Brain Games will take place on Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m.-noon. Kids ENTERING grades 1-3 can drop in each week for grade-appropriate educational games and activities in four subject areas. Teen volunteers and staff from Westlake City Schools will be on hand to assist. Parents of children under age 9 are required to stay in the library while their children are participating in Brain Games. Brain Games is a drop-in program – no registration is necessary!
