Course ponders the alluring universe

Looking for a class that is simply out of this world, and will give you the sun, moon, stars and planets too? Consider an experiential class called, "Powers of the Universe," not for the faint of heart, but a class to really sink your spiritual teeth into. A 12-week spiritual journey packaged into a course aimed at pondering the most puzzling questions known to man, "Who am I?", "Where did I come from?", and "Why am I here?".

Answers to these profound questions will be explored and may be answered, if you are open to the wonder of answers. This star-filled journey is based on cosmologist Brian Swimme's DVD series, and the spirituality of Teilhard de Chardin. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a French philosopher and Jesuit priest trained as a paleontologist and geologist. He is famous for the quote: "We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a physical experience." Brian Swimme is a faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies, teaching evolutionary cosmology.

This class starts Sept. 3 and goes through Nov. 19, on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., allowing plenty of time to dig into the vast universe and the complexities, puzzles and mysteries she continually presents us with. Endorsed by Brian Swimme, and presented by Maureen Gaughan Haggerty, from the first to the final week, the class seeks to bridge the existing gap between science and religion. It will look at the ever-evolving universe from the "Big Bang Theory" to today through DVD viewing, group discussion, meditation, creative expression, and energy embodiment. You will be encouraged to observe, absorb and listen, or actively participate in discussion.

Maureen is a spiritual director whose passion for the unfolding story of the universe began at a young age. She has studied Albert Einstein, Joseph Campbell, Jane Goodall, Carl Jung, and of course, Brian Swimme and Teilhard de Chardin. There are no tests or homework given, so you are free to listen and absorb as you explore the seamlessness, centration, allurement, and emergence of the changing universe.

Pre-registration and payment are required. The course fee of $300 includes a 200-page binder. Class size is limited, with half-price being offered for early registration by Aug. 4. Class will be offered at Unity Spiritual Center, 23855 Detroit Road, Westlake. Go to for more info, or call Maureen Haggerty at 440-899-4925.

The universe has a story of wonder to tell you if you will listen, a mystery to reveal to you if you will believe. Find the real star in the universe, it looks just like you. Will wonders never cease?
