Light a single candle

How long would it take to light a candle for an intention dear to your heart? How long to find yourself stepping away from the hustle and the bustle, the to-do lists, the "I've got to get this done today" mindset? Maybe five minutes? Yet ... a lot can be accomplished in five minutes.

Sept. 11, 2014, World Day of Prayer, is set apart from others as a day of prayer, reflection, connection, and inner and outer peace. A day that new harmony fills the earth to wash away previous discord. In the Unity movement, it is a dedicated day of reflection, sitting in the serenity of silence, removing the barriers that surround your heart to connect with the glow of a candle, or the stranger next to you. This years' theme is "Let your light shine."

Letting our light shine calls for self-acceptance, self-love, compassion and understanding. Without these your light would be just a flicker, struggling through self put-downs until it matures and blossoms into self-love. Light a candle for yourself, or someone you love or have loved, or for the world to be a better place.

Unity Spiritual Center, 23855 Detroit Road, will hold a prayer vigil starting at 7 a.m. and lasting until 6 p.m., with the Daily Word read every half-hour. Daily Word gives us a snapshot of scripture to take into our daily lives and put into practice. It offers an explanation of Scripture that is down to earth, and easily understood. It allows people of all faiths to foster and live from positive attitudes to enjoy healthy and prosperous lives.

There will be a central table for everyone to access with Bible passages, prayers with the Twelve Powers, written personal prayer requests, and forms to request prayers for yourself. Sit in silence, feel and enjoy the calm sweep over you, come away from the stress of the world.

From 6-6:45 p.m. there will be an outdoor labyrinth walk with Eileen. Let nature whisper sweet things to you, as you walk and listen.

At 7 p.m., Service in the Hall begins. There will be positive prayer, sacred music, meditation and personal readings of the Twelve Powers.

The power of prayer reaches far beyond any earthly power to bring harmony and comfort to situations that might seem hopeless to mortal man. Come join the single-mindedness of prayer as Unity of Westlake celebrates World Day of Prayer, along with Unity Worldwide Ministries.

Let your light shine like a single candle glows so that its warmth and radiance may be a gift to others, and the world shall relish your light so unique, and Spirit shall blend it with others to mend the world. The world needs your radiance on Sept. 11, and always. Let your light shine!
