Public invited to event honoring Porter Library board president
A public reception honoring Westlake Porter Public Library Board President Bob Plantz will take place at the library on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Plantz received the Ohio Library Council’s Trustee Award of Achievement at the organization’s annual convention on Oct. 8. The award recognizes the library trustee or board of trustees that demonstrates distinguished service and innovative leadership within the community and across Ohio.
Plantz has served on Westlake Porter Public Library’s board of trustees since 2004. He is currently President of the board, a position he has filled since 2013. He has also served the board as vice-president and secretary. A committed leader, he attends staff and Friends of the Library events faithfully, taking the time get to know the staff and Friends volunteers involved. He also takes the time to attend meetings and informational sessions that will help him better understand issues, partnerships, legislation and decision-making that will affect Westlake Porter Public Library.
Plantz’ dedication to the library extends past his board duties. When pipes burst in the library this past winter, he pitched in to help clean up the mess, working long into the night. In addition he is an outreach volunteer, delivering library materials to homebound Westlake residents since 2007. He also assisted the library’s efforts to secure grants to provide services, through Connecting for Kids, to families of individuals with special needs, and meets and talks with legislators about the value of public libraries and the impact they have on people’s lives.
Plantz has also demonstrated a commitment to the betterment of his community and Ohio’s libraries. He has participated in Westlake City School committees and focus groups, including the Continuous Improvement Planning Committee. Plantz was a supporter of WPPL’s participation in SearchOhio/OhioLink, a move which paved the ground for libraries throughout Ohio using the SIRSI catalog system to join and provide access to the collections of 26 libraries to their patrons.
“Bob’s wonderful sense of humor, willingness to listen to all points of view and wisdom in making tough decisions have made him a superlative trustee,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “There is no one more deserving of this award.”
