St. Edward and St. Ignatius unite to benefit those facing cancer

St. Edward and St. Ignatius high schools have long enjoyed tradition-rich histories and a storied rivalry on the west side of Cleveland. Their highly anticipated annual football game, the so-called “Holy War,” is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1. This year, the two schools will celebrate the occasion by uniting for a special evening of collegial fun, relaxation and witty repartee (smack talk) to benefit the Village Project, which provides nourishing meals and extended care and service to those experiencing cancer.

Organizing the event for this important cause are Tom Kauker (St. Ignatius) and Jim Gerace (St. Edward). Tom Kauker shared why the community organization is close to his heart. “I wish the Village Project was around when my dad had cancer in 1998. He had hospice at our house until he passed. This is probably the primary reason that [my wife] Janet and I help with the Village Project. Their work is, by all accounts, wonderful. Barb [Harrell, executive director] and her group will go directly to heaven.”

The event will be held at the Great Lakes Brewing Company tasting room on Thursday, Oct. 30, beginning at 6 p.m. Each guest will be able to enjoy two of Great Lakes Brewing’s finest beers plus tailgate-themed appetizer stations, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and Wildcats vs. Eagles sideboards. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to witness LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Knicks in their home opener on the big screen. Does it get any better than this for a Cleveland sports fan?

Tickets are limited and may be reserved now on the Village Project website www.ourvillageproject.com or by calling Village Project at 440-348-9401. The donation is $50 per person, and all proceeds benefit Village Project. This FUNdraiser is open to everyone 21 years and older. You do not need to be a fan of either St. Ignatius or St. Edward – just ready to have a good time.

More information about this organization, which serves families in Bay Village, Avon Lake and Rocky River, can be found on the website or by calling 440-348-9401.
