BAYarts announces scholarship for graduating seniors

The Ruth Purdy-Leslie Scholarship Fund at BAYarts was created in memory of the much-loved Bay Schools art teacher in 2011. Originally to aid students interested in taking BAYarts classes, the program was expanded to include scholarships for college-bound students.

Three awards of $500 will be given to graduating seniors pursuing careers in art. Because BAYarts' reach extends beyond Bay Village, the fund will be available to graduating seniors from any school district in the greater Cleveland area pursuing a career in visual arts: art education, fine art, art therapy and so on. Unlike other applications, this award is not based on merit or need, but on a student's passion and commitment.

Being in the art world is a way of life. In our application, we want to get to know the artist and why art matters to them. Janet Purdy, Ruth's daughter, who had the unenviable task of reviewing the applications last year, was moved by the passion and commitment of the applications, making it very tough to narrow down to only three awards. BAYarts is expecting many more applications this year and the Purdy family will once again chose the finalists.

Applications are due by March 16; awards will be announced in late May. Applications are available at or at BAYarts at 28795 Lake Road.
