Gearing up for Relay for Life of Westshore

We have a lot of big news for Relay this year! First and most important is that the event will be a day event instead of an overnight. The Survivor Brunch will held in the Westlake High School cafeteria at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, with opening ceremonies starting at noon. We will enjoy a day packed with activities ending at 11 p.m. We are thrilled to have Marigolds Catering back to donate lunch to our amazing survivors with goodies after. We will then head over to the Westlake High School track for the Opening Lap.

We have several teams returning and new ones signing up. It is so easy to become a part of the day by signing up a team at www.relayforlife.org/westshore. You are also able to sign up for the Survivor Brunch on this site. Once you sign up your team you can start fundraising right away. Using social media, email and word of mouth you can send people to your webpage to sign up for your team and donate.

The second major change is that there is no longer a $10 registration fee to sign up. This allows more people to join and more money to be raised. Remember that if you raise just $100 you receive an event T-shirt.

Our event theme is Carnival this year so get ready for games, a DJ, live music and hopefully some yummy carnival foods. I am hoping for cotton candy.

As always we will end the event with the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk and honor those we have lost, those that are fighting and, of course, our survivors. This is a great opportunity for friends and family to share in this emotional yet loving lap around the track illuminated by all the luminaria bags that are personalized with the names of people that we are working so hard for to find a cure.

We are also looking for businesses in the area to support us with sponsorships. The event includes Bay Village, Westlake, Avon and Avon Lake. If you know someone who owns a business in any of these cities, please approach them and ask them for their help. They can contact Suzan Piskur at 888-227-6446, ext. 1212, or suzan.piskur@cancer.org.

I also wanted to send out a quick reminder that this is a walking event. You may run if you choose but it is a day of walking, meeting new friends, finding kindred souls and raising money to end the fight against cancer. Please join us and take some time to make a few phone calls, send out emails and jam Facebook with the info so we can make this year a wonderful success.
