WHS assistant principal tabbed to head Dover Intermediate

Westlake High School Assistant Principal David J. Schindler was appointed as the new principal at Dover Intermediate School by the Board of Education at the April 27 meeting.

Schindler was hired as a high school assistant principal in 2013 after spending 18 years with Positive Education Program (PEP), a specialized school in Cleveland for students with special needs.

At PEP, Schindler served in a principal role for two years and an assistant principal role for an additional two years. He also spent 10 years as a teacher of students in grades four through seven, including six years on the curriculum development team.

In addition, Schindler was a peer coach at PEP, providing internal professional development training. He helped to establish and run a program for community-based learning service projects for students and was the point liaison for the agency with resource groups in the Central neighborhood of Cleveland.

Schindler earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from The Ohio State University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction moderate-intensive needs from Cleveland State University, and his educational administration license from Ursuline College. He is a National Board Certified teacher, as well as an Ohio Teacher Evaluation System and Ohio Principal Evaluation System credentialed evaluator.

“Dave brings extensive experience teaching students at this age level. He is extremely knowledgeable of teaching and learning and has developed strong leadership skills in his roles at PEP and here at Westlake Schools,” said Superintendent Geoff Palmer. “He is committed to seeing Dover Intermediate School succeed in fulfilling our mission to educate for excellence.”

“Dover Intermediate has a strong tradition of excellence with caring and dedicated students, staff and families,” Schindler said. “I am very excited for the opportunity to continue my career in Westlake and to work with these great people.”

Schindler lives in Avon Lake with his wife, Beth, and their children Anna, 14, Jack, 12, and Danielle, 4. He replaces Mark Bregar, who is retiring after 19 years with the Westlake City Schools, 17 of which were spent at Parkside/Dover Intermediate School.
