Relay for Life of Westshore gearing up for May 30 event

With less than two weeks to go until the Relay for Life of Westshore, we are really stepping up our game. Our committee and teams are in full force to help make this the best event yet.

Please join us Saturday, May 30, at the Westlake High School stadium from noon until 11 p.m. for games, bounce house, food, DJ and our main event, The Princess and Pirate Party. Join Anna, Elsa and Jake the Neverland Pirate as we have an ice cream social, crafts and photos with the princesses or pirate. The donation is $10 per child and is bound to be a Fairy Tale good time. The party will start at 1:30 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. Come anytime during that time to enjoy the fun.

Our Survivor Brunch is also legendary with Marigold Catering donating the entire meal again to let our Survivors know how much we care and how we root for them everyday. The brunch will begin at 11 a.m. and close at noon as we all walk over to the stadium to have our Opening Ceremony and Survivor Lap. It is a wonderful way to honor our fighters. You can sign up for the brunch on our website to ensure you receive the correct size shirt or you can, of course, just come that day and be treated to the amazing meal and be surrounded by friends and family. All involved share stories and hope.

After the Opening Ceremony we will start our carnival-themed day with games, bands, choirs, DJ, bounce house and much more. Food will be served all day along with all the fun you can handle. This is a wonderful family event and for just a few dollars you can really enjoy the day.

As dusk approaches we will be getting ready for our main event that always draws our biggest crowd: the Luminaria Ceremony. It is a chance to honor and support those affected by this disease. The track is lit up by luminaria – paper bags containing votive candles or glow sticks – that have the names of survivors, caregivers and those we have lost.

You can go to the website and purchase a luminaria or purchase them at the event. Our faithful volunteers will then line the track and the ceremony will begin under the stars with a speaker, music and love. Silence is given for our Survivor lap as we walk as one in the fight to end this disease. A touching moment for all.

Please join me in the fight and to honor my dad who lost his battle with cancer over two years ago. He is my inspiration and my drive to keep chairing this event as we work as a team of cities (Bay Village, Westlake, Avon and Avon Lake) to make the Westshore Relay the success I know it can be.

Our website is relayforlife.org/westshore. Visit the site for more info or call me direct at 440-666-0662.

The clock is ticking and as I sit and write this I see a cardinal in the yard – I can’t help but consider the symbolism that cardinals are visitors from Heaven. Thanks, dad, for showing up and giving the strength I need to be the best Event Chair I can. Hopefully a cardinal visits you soon. Hope to see you on May 30.
