BAYarts pop-culture trio shines this month
A humorous, pop-culture-loving trio of artists present "Triple Lindy" at BAYarts this month. Randy Crider, Ryan Finley and Jim Giar are three popular teachers of cartooning and comics that BAYarts provides for young children and teens. They have joined up to present an art exhibition which features individual artwork as well as collaborations.
The three all find inspiration from their students. Crider explains, "Everything I am putting in this show was executed with the help and influence of my students. Over the past year, they've been a very powerful engine in choosing what to draw, and honing the hand drawn style that until this year I was too afraid to try."
Artists naturally display their own niche style, and such is the case here. "I like to focus more on the art of sequential storytelling ... or comic books," says Giar. "I enjoy the thought process that goes with it. Ryan teaches a lot of the fan-based classes that I know the kids really enjoy. Crider teaches cartooning and basic drawing fundamentals. I can always tell when I have one of his students in my class because the ground work is there." As fans of each other, they are generous with both compliments and insights.
"Jim brings such realism to each piece," points out Finley, "while Randy has you wondering how he didn't go crazy with his expert cross-hatching."
Unable to select one favorite piece of artwork in the exhibition, Crider pronounced that the collection as a whole was what he was excited to share. "It's an artistic journey encapsulated in one room on the campus that influenced it."
The opening reception is Friday, Oct. 9, 7-9 p.m. The exhibit is on display through Oct. 28. For a list of classes taught by these teachers, visit bayarts.net.
