LBMS student earns presidential honor

Lee Burneson Middle School eighth-grader Lauren Havelka was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award by the Corporation for National and Community Service, recognizing her for achieving 250 service hours.

Lauren was nominated for the award by her school. She is involved in a number of programs and organizations, including Builders Club (where she serves as president) at the middle school, Girl Scouts, Coats for Kids, Mutt Hutt and Second Hand Mutts.

“We are thrilled and happy she was awarded this since she is so deserving,” said Cassandra Persia, LBMS language arts teacher and Builders Club supervisor. Builders Club is an international student-led program providing members with opportunities to perform service, build character and develop leadership. LBMS’ club is offered in partnership with Westlake Kiwanis Club.

Former Builders Club advisor Pam Dreher, who nominated Lauren for the award, said, “I look forward to seeing what she will accomplish in the future because she is an amazing young lady.”

Lauren received a certificate and a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama.
