Westlake hosts seventh annual Special Olympics

New Westlake Superintendent Scott Goggins carries the Olympic torch.

The Westlake Kiwanis and Westlake Schools staged their seventh annual Special Olympics on Saturday, June 4, at the Westlake High School Lou Duchez Field. The excitement began when incoming Westlake Superintendent Scott Goggins led the Special Olympians around the Westlake High School track carrying the Olympic Torch. The Rocky River Adult Center Choir and the Westlake Aktion Club sang the national anthem to get the competition started.

Athletes ran, jumped, walked and threw their way to gold, silver and bronze medals. There were 67 competitors and all were winners. It was hard to tell who enjoyed the competition more – the athletes or the volunteers. Everyone came away with smiles on their faces.
