WHS French students impress in national competition

Westlake High School French students participated in the 2017 annual Grand Concours and came away with several top finishes.

The Grand Concours is a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students were evaluated for their written, oral and listening comprehension skills. More than 80,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2017 event. Participants in the 2017 National French Exam were students of Laura Emmer and Elizabeth Zingales.

Claire Brewer (level 3) earned a Gold award, finishing in the 95th percentile.

Silver awards were earned by Level 2 students Zahraa Abdulameer, Tara Al-Hashimy, Chloe Chen, Sean Dunphy, Katie Fogarty, Lauren Havelka and Kailee Kretzinger; Level 3 student Rafi Melikian; and Level 5 student Anna Craven. These students finished in the top 85th-90th percentile.

Bronze awards were earned by Level 2 students Sami Jablonski, Julia Kreeger, Eric Kronz and Sam Thomas; Level 3 students Ella Gray, Chad Sargent and Laurent Schultz; and Level 4 students Madelyn Lockshine and Norah Wilson. These students finished in the top 75th to 80th percentile.

Mention d’honneur were earned by 33 students. These students finished in the 50th to 70th percentile.
