Fall fun at the Westlake Recreation Center

The hayride at the Fall Festival is fun for the whole family.

As the days become cooler and the leaves turn shades of red and yellow, we turn our thoughts to apple picking, pumpkin hunts and warm cider. The Westlake Recreation Center has many indoor and outdoor activities planned for children, adults and families. We are introducing some new programming for all ages and interests, including cooking classes, while bringing back the popular adult game of pickleball.

On Oct. 9, join Ms. Nisha as she offers cooking classes for children and adults. Children ages 3-5 years will be accompanied by an adult as they explore food through the alphabet. Can you think of a food that begins with the letter X? The Dinner Club teaches food prep and cooking from scratch for children ages 5-16 years. Dishes will include salads, casseroles and cookies. With our busy schedules we sometimes find it challenging to prepare meals as we juggle work, practice and homework. Ms. Nisha shares family recipes. With classes for the whole family, preparing dinner can become a wonderful bonding time with your family as you plan and prepare meals together.

Is it tennis? Is it badminton? No, it’s pickleball! Combining elements of ping-pong, badminton and tennis, this is a fun, competitive game that may be played as singles or doubles. Join us Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m. There is a $3 fee to participate in each session.

Scarecrows, pumpkins, and Halloween treats, oh my! Registration for our fifth annual Scarecrow Contest is underway. Families, companies and small groups are invited to participate and have their silliest, scariest or most imaginative scarecrow displayed along the scarecrow trail. The deadline to register is Sept. 23. The $20 registration fee includes assembly guidelines, wood and hay.

All are invited to attend the annual Fall Festival on Oct. 14 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. We will have hay rides, bouncy houses, face painters, food trucks and much more. Children, ages 9 and under, may participate in the Pumpkin Hunt. The event is free, however, pre-registration is required for the Pumpkin Hunt by 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 13.

On Oct. 20, the trail behind the Recreation Center will be transformed into a Haunted Treat Trail. Children ages 8 and under may dress in their favorite costume as they collect treats along the haunted path. Pre-registration runs through Oct. 19. Cost is $3 for members, $4 for non-members in advance; and day of event is $5 per person.

The Westlake Recreation Center will be hiring scorekeepers for the 2018 adult basketball and softball leagues. If you would like to learn more about the opportunity, we are offering training sessions beginning in October. This one-time training costs $20 with sessions available on Oct. 9, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
