Westlake Porter Public Library's late-December calendar of events

Sunday, Dec. 17 (2-3 p.m.) Spa 2.0 – In our second Teen Spa program, we will make our own beauty products. We will be making lip gloss, make-up remover, a make-up brush cleaner and another lip scrub. There will also be an opportunity to apply a face mask during the program. Grades 7-12. Registration begins Dec. 10.

Monday, Dec. 18 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30-minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Monday, Dec. 18 (7-8 p.m.) Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body – Science is now able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Please register.

Tuesday, Dec. 19 (6:30-8:45 p.m.) Anime Movie Club – Enjoy and discuss all your favorite anime movies from Studio Ghibli and beyond! Grades 7 to adult.

Wednesday, Dec. 20 (2-5 p.m.) Elf Academy – Santa is extra busy this year and needs your help. Join in our reindeer games and train to become a “Certified Elf” by completing several elf-ercises. Just drop in! While supplies last.

Wednesday, Dec. 20 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The December selection is "Commonwealth" by Ann Patchett.

Movies @ the Library! – Join us from 2-4 p.m. during Winter break for family-friendly movies. (All are rated PG.) All ages. Please register beginning one week before each film. Featured movies:

  • Thursday, Dec. 21: A Heffley family road trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course thanks to Greg’s newest scheme to get to a video gaming convention.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 26: Two imaginative pranksters named George and Harold hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 27: Gru meets his long-lost charming, cheerful and more successful twin brother Dru, who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.
  • Friday, Dec. 29: A mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest, leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history.

Friday, Dec. 22 (10 a.m.-noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems and show off.

Friday, Dec. 22 (Ages 4-6, 3-3:45 p.m.; Grades K-2, 4-4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday – Join Mrs. K as we explore our world! In December we’ll explore the colors of the season, and in January we’ll learn about animals that love winter. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturday, Dec. 23 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Polar Express Fun Day! – Drop in as we celebrate "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg. We’ll have crafts and activities for all ages to enjoy.

Saturday, Dec. 30 (2-3:30 p.m.) Make Your Own New Year’s Hat – Stop by the Youth Services Department to make and decorate your own kind of party hat for your New Year’s celebration. All ages welcome.

Sunday, Dec. 31 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club – Celebrate the New Year with games and a seasonal craft. Party clothes are optional for you and your doll. Ages 6-11. Registration begins Dec. 24.

Sunday, Dec. 31 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you.
