3 LBMS students qualify for state chemist challenge

LBMS regional chemistry contest participants Joseph McGervey, Thomas Fogel, state qualifiers Anusha Bangalaore and Alexa Higgs, Subratha Araselvan and regional champion Neige DeAngelis.

Three Lee Burneson Middle School eighth-grade students qualified for the state-level "You Be The Chemist" Challenge contest in Toledo on April 14.

You Be the Chemist is an interactive academic contest sponsored by the Chemical Education Foundation that encourages students in grades 5-8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. LBMS state qualifiers are Neige DeAngelis, champion of the qualifier competition; Anusha Bangalore, who came in third place; and Alexa Higgs, who came in sixth place and is an alternate for the state challenge.

All seventh- and eighth-grade science students participated in a timed, interactive question-and-answer contest in January. The top students from LBMS – Joseph McGervey, Thomas Fogel, Anusha Bangalore, Alexa Higgs, Subratha Araselvan and Neige DeAngelis – advanced to the regional contest at the Great Lakes Science Center in March. They were among the 28 students – chosen from 1,650 qualifying exams graded – participating from six Greater Cleveland area schools. The top state qualifiers will advance to the national challenge.
