Westlake Girl Scouts build gaga pit for Silver Award

Westlake Girl Scouts play gaga in the new gaga pit they constructed behind Dover Intermediate School.

Westlake Girl Scout Troop 168 led by leader Dawn Evans and co-leader Bernadette Kronz dedicated the first Westlake gaga pit on the grounds of Dover Intermediate School on Wednesday, May 30.

Gaga is a type of dodgeball game that is played with one ball. The game combines dodging, striking, running and jumping, with the objective of being the last person standing. Players hit the ball at each other with their hands, and are eliminated if the ball strikes them on or below the knee.

The Scouts in Westlake Troop 168 wanted to provide an activity that ALL children could be included in playing for their Silver Award project. The Girl Scout Silver Award is given to a group of girls who identify a need in their community, and through determination, leadership and organization skills, develop a project to address that need.

From researching locations, meeting with community leaders, and developing a plan of action, this troop designed a project that they are sure will provide fun for all who play!

This troop had overwhelming support from the City of Westlake and the Westlake City Schools for this project. Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough, school board members Joseph Kraft and John Finucane, Councilwoman Lynda Appel and DIS Principal Nick Miller all played the first official gaga game before the Scouts took over.

The gaga pit is open for play behind the Dover Intermediate School building.
