Bay Chapter LWV awards scholarships
The Bay Village Chapter of the League of Women Voters is pleased to announce the Bay High School recipients of the 2020 Good Citizen Scholar Awards: Ellie LaMotte and John Kilbane. These students will be awarded $1,000 each for their college expenses and were selected by the Bay High staff to whom we are grateful.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of women suffrage, the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters, and the 73rd anniversary of the Bay Village Chapter. As a grassroots organization with nationwide influence, the League firmly believes that each of us can make a difference by demonstrating character, scholarship and leadership. Our scholarship winners embody that sentiment.
This memorial scholarship honors two eminent Bay League members: Maxine M. McQuate, a champion of student involvement in government, and George Serb, community historian and peerless citizen activist.
Ellie LaMotte will be attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan, next fall on a pre-occupational therapy track. At Bay High, she has been involved in cross country, track, National Honor Society, SADD, Key Club, PAL, coaching Girls on the Run, and the Student of the Year fundraiser team. Ellie has also worked with the youth group at Bay Presbyterian Church.
John Kilbane will pursue a double major in business entrepreneurship and architecture at Miami University, Ohio. He has been very involved with the Youth Philanthropic Foundation and served as president this past year. He has also been on the junior leadership board of the Village Project and played hockey. He hopes to someday own an architecture and real estate development company.
Congratulations to both of our scholarship winners!
After retiring from teaching English at Lakewood High School, I now write, cook and cycle as well as teach writing at TriC. My husband, Bill, and I have lived in Bay Village for over thirty years.
