Porter Library's Summer Reading Challenge will be online this year

Westlake Porter Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Challenge will be conducted solely online this year to minimize transmission of the COVID-19 virus. All the other details will be the same: Read books and attend library programs via Zoom, YouTube and other virtual means and become eligible for weekly prizes and a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer. The program will run from June 1 to Aug. 1 and is for all ages, from birth to adult.

Participants should register online via Beanstack at westlakelibrary.beanstack.org. Anyone who has previously used Beanstack to participate in library challenges like Winter Reading, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten or last year’s Summer Reading Challenge should still be able to use their account. Anyone who hasn’t used it before just needs to register.

In addition to library programs, Beanstack offers other interactive fun, such as winning badges, completing extra activities to receive additional grand prize raffle entries, and tracking your challenge progress. Parents can add their children to their account, and participants can track their accounts easily on mobile devices using Beanstack’s app for iOS or Android.

Babies through teens can earn up to 1,500 points by reading or completing activities. Earning 700 points gets young readers eligibility for a halfway prize. All who earn 1,500 points will receive the final prize and an entry in the grand prize raffle drawings. Youngsters can earn extra entries for the grand prizes by earning more points.

All points must be earned by Aug. 1 to be eligible for any prizes, which will be available beginning June 14. Prizes are courtesy of the Friends of Porter Public Library and other sponsors as available.

Participants who desire a print reading and activity log can download and print one from the library website at westlakelibrary.org/summer or request print copies be placed in the bag with their curbside pickup materials. Information about the library’s virtual programs can be found on the website at westlakelibrary.org, the online catalog at events.westlakelibrary.org, the library’s social media and by subscribing to the e-newsletter.
