'Community of Fine Arts' showcases 57 artists

"Springtime," a watercolor by Ken Marshall, is included in the 2013 CFA show, August 5-17 at Porter Library.

The "Community of Fine Arts” will open on August 5 and for the second year in a row will set a record for the largest collection of works in its history.

This is the fourteenth year for CFA, a juried art show presented annually by the Westlake-Westshore Arts Council. The show will be on display and open for public viewing through August 17 at Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road, during library hours.

Jean Povinelli, who chairs this event, said over 110 original works by amateur and professional artists were accepted from 57 artists. The works are one of a kind and have not previously been exhibited in this show.

The accepted entries will be judged in four categories: Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Charcoal/Pastel/Pencil/Ink and Photography.  A $150 cash award will be made for the first-place choice in each of the categories. Honorable Mention certificates will also be awarded as determined by the judges. The judges for the 2013 show are:

  • Paul St. Denis, nationally acclaimed watercolorist, Dolphin Fellow of the prestigious American Watercolor Society and a member of the National Watercolor Society. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art as a painter and educator.
  • Dave Stretar, past president of Erie Shores Photography Club and past officer of the Northeast Ohio Camera Club Council.
  • Patricia Sigmier, teacher of watercolor painting, life drawing and botanical illustration at the Beck Center and she teaches plein air painting in Case Western Reserve University’s Continuing Education Department.

During the art show, artists whose works are exhibited will do live demonstrations of their techniques. A schedule of the artists’ demonstrations will be displayed in the lobby of the library where the demonstrations will take place.

On Saturday, August 17, the show’s closing day, the public is invited to a “Meet the Artists” reception to be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

The mission of the Westlake-Westshore Arts Council is to bring art to the public in a non-commercial setting. With the cooperation of Porter Library, the Community of Fine Arts is free and open to all.
