WHS senior Sebastian Francesconi receives Jeffery Owen Marriott Memorial Scholarship

Sebastian Francesconi received the Jeffery Owen Marriott Memorial Scholarship on May 19 at the Westlake High School Senior Awards Banquet Night.

Westlake High School senior Sebastian Francesconi was awarded the second annual “Jeffery Owen Marriott Memorial Scholarship” at the Senior Awards Banquet Night.  Francesconi was selected based on his strong academic success, leadership roles, community involvement and athletic success at Westlake – all attributes of Jeffery Marriott, for whom the scholarship honors.

Francesconi earned an impressive 10 varsity letters as a member of the Demons cross country, swimming, and track and field teams, after moving to Westlake his sophomore year. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains a 4.2 GPA. He will attend Miami University (OH) in the fall where he will join the Redhawks Cross Country and Track team.

Francesconi was this year’s Southwestern Conference (SWC) cross country champion, becoming the first Demon to win the boys championship in nearly 15 years.  Further, Francesconi was named twice to the first-team All-SWC team and took home MVP honors this year.

In swimming, Francesconi was a three-time letter winner and a two-time All SWC second-team selection while serving as a captain this past season.

In track and field, he is a three-time letter winner and received the team's distance MVP award. He is currently in post-season competition, where he hopes to bring home OHSAA district accolades for the Demons.

“Sebastian is obviously a talented athlete, but in addition to that, we felt he exemplified Jeff’s character, drive, passion and ambition,” said Jeff Hammond, a friend and board member of the Jeffery Owen Marriott Memorial Scholarship. “Jeff was a scholar athlete at WHS and co-captained his football and basketball teams in 1992,” explained Hammond.  “Sebastian also captained his teams, and perhaps most importantly, supported his teammates and friends when faced with illness and hardship. Sebastian was a true leader on and off the field and we couldn’t have picked a finer young man to receive the scholarship.”
