Bay Village launches BV60+ activities for active seniors

The Bay Village Senior Center has launched BV60+, a new group for more active “seniors,” along with activities to appeal to this population.

While anyone age 55+ may actually come to the senior center, focus groups revealed that “younger seniors” do not want to come to a senior center because 1) they are still working, and 2) they do not consider themselves seniors. We also learned, however, that this age group wants to socialize and get to know people in their age group and community.

A BV60+ volunteer program committee was formed to plan programs to appeal to this group. More than 40 people have enjoyed playing pickle ball on Wednesday evenings this summer, and our August events of a Sunday evening concert at BAYarts, as well as winery tastings in the Vermilion area, were very successful.

Our September activities focus on enjoying our beautiful September weather and surroundings:

Trip to Mapleside Farms: Thursday, Sept. 27, noon

This trip includes a bagged lunch, a hayride(!), cider, doughnuts and apples.

After a hayride tour of the orchards, we will stop for some cider and a doughnut before talking with Mapleside’s apple specialist and visiting the apple packing house. We will also be given two apples to take home.

Cost of the tour is $10 for transportation and a bagged lunch, and $11 paid at Mapleside for the tour. RSVP by email to lselig@cityofbayvillage.com. You may also drive separately for this trip.

Birdwatching Field Trip at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center: Sunday, Sept. 23, 8 a.m.

We will join the Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society to walk the woods and fields of the Cleveland Metroparks Huntington Reservation and the Lake Erie shore in search of migrating warblers and other birds moving through the area on their way south. Meet in the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center parking lot, 28728 Wolf Road in Bay Village. Erik Bruder will be our leader.

The best part is you do not have to be a Bay Village resident to participate in BV60+ activities! If you would like to attend any of these events, or if you would like to be made aware of upcoming events, email lselig@cityofbayvillage.com.
