Westlake Porter Public Library's early May calendar of events

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s early May 2022 calendar of events. All programs are subject to change. Please check westlakelibrary.org or follow the library on Facebook and Twitter (@WestlakePorter) for the latest updates.

Tuesday, May 3 (7-8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum – The World at War Forum is a group of local people interested in the history of the first 50 years of the 20th century and the cataclysmic World Wars and associated events that helped shape our current world. The May program will be "Fear God and Dreadnaught: The Battleship of the 20th Century," rescheduled from January. Join us for a lively discussion of the history and impact of the battleship on the 20th century. In addition, attendees will be able to participate in a series of naval war games. Please register.

Wednesdays, May 4 and 11 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Join us in person or stream on Watch2Gether.com. The link will be posted at 6 p.m. the day of the program.

Wednesday, May 4 (7-7:30 p.m.) and Saturdays, May 7 and 14 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! For families with children ages 2-6. Siblings are welcome. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursday, May 5 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursday, May 5 (1:30-3:30 p.m.) Painting with Acrylics – Learn from a professional acrylics painter how to create a canvas painting of a fishbowl with fish using acrylics. Please register.

Friday, May 6 (4-5 p.m.) and Sunday, May 15 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos? Bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration required; first come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Saturday, May 7 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) Free Comic Book Day – Join us to celebrate Free Comic Book Day! We will be giving out free comic books in the lobby all day (while supplies last) through our partnership with Carol & John’s Comic Book Shop.

Friday, May 9 (9:30-10 a.m.) Music Is My Jam – Explore music with shakers, rhythm sticks and more! For children ages 2-7 with disabilities, and a caregiver. Siblings are welcome. This program will encourage gross and fine motor movements while playing with instruments and moving to music. Playing musical instruments stimulates the brain to make new connections and strengthens existing ones. This program is led by a librarian, not a therapist and is not a substitute for music or other therapy. Please register.

Mondays, May 9 and 16 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge for video games, board games and more! Grades 7-12.

Monday, May 9 (7-8:30 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library's 3D printer, you'll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Tuesday, May 10 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join us in person or on Zoom to discuss "The Four Winds" by Kristin Hannah. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option you will receive instructions by email.

Wednesday, May 11 (6-8:30 p.m.) Heartsaver CPR/AED – Get certified for adult, child, and infant CPR and AED. Email required for certification. Participants under the age of 14 must have a parent or legal guardian with them in class. Instruction provided by certified instructors from UH St. John Medical Center. Thursday, May 12 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Roblox Arcade (Virtual) – Love Roblox? Join us in the Roblox Arcade! We have some private servers set up for Tweens in grades 4-6 to hang out with their friends and enjoy some of the most popular games via Zoom. Registration begins May 5.

Thursday, May 12 (6-7 p.m.) Mama and Me Tea – Have fun with pretend play and pouring and scooping stations. It's tea for two – mom and you! Ages 2-7. This program is intended for children of all abilities, with an emphasis on pretend and sensory play. Siblings, and other loved ones and grown-ups welcome. Registration begins May 5.

Thursday, May 12 (7-8 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is "The Two Lives of Lydia Bird" by Josie Silver. The group meets the second Thursday of odd months. Participants will need to obtain their own copies of the title. Please register.

Friday, May 13 (4-4:30 p.m.) Read It, Make It @ the Library – Make a craft based on a story that is read aloud. Grades PreK-1, siblings are welcome. Registration begins May 6.

Saturday, May 14 (1-2 p.m.) Pokemon Fun – Join Miss Rachel for Pokemon fun! This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft (if desired), and play a Pokemon bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards! Ages 6-11. Registration begins May 7.

Sunday, May 15 (2-4 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otaku and newbies welcome! Grades 7-Adult. Registration opens May 8.

Monday, May 16 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Things That Go Craft Pick-Up – Celebrate things that go with some fun crafts! Registration begins May 9.

Monday, May 16 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Amazing Adults – Enjoy crafts, songs, simple fitness, and more fun in each session! This program is for adults with disabilities. Registration begins May 9.

Monday, May 16 (1-2:30 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – This month’s title is "When a Killer Calls: A Haunting Story of Murder, Criminal Profiling, and Justice in a Small Town" by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. Please register.

Monday, May 16 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Embroidery Design – Learn how to design your own patches for our new embroidery machine that you can later pick up at the drive up window! Please register.

Tuesday, May 17 (4-4:45 p.m.) The Science of Magic Tree House: Shadow of the Shark – Join Mrs. K as we explore the book "Shadow of the Shark." We will learn about sharks and other fish in the ocean. Grades 1-2. Registration begins May 10.
