STEAM Week returns to WPPL July 18-23!

Westlake Porter Public Library's annual STEAM Week has begun! Learn all about science, technology, engineering, arts and math in a variety of ways while helping kids prepare for the coming school year.

All week long, the library will feature blog posts on its website about science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, as well as a variety of programs for all ages. The remaining schedule includes:

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 (2-2:45 p.m.)

STEAM Challenge: Building for Hurricanes

Can you build a structure that can survive a simulated hurricane? We’ll provide the materials. You supply the creativity. Assemble your design team or build solo. Then we’ll test your creation in simulated Hurricane conditions. For teens in grades 7-12.

THURSDAY, JULY 21 (11 a.m.-noon)

WPPL’s Annual Egg Drop

Celebrate engineering during STEAM week with your design for the egg drop. Building starts at 11 a.m. in the Porter Room. Join us at noon in the library lobby for the official egg drop. No registration required.

Stories in Shadow (2-4 p.m.)

Watch Jacqueline Woodson’s book, "The Other Side," performed with shadow puppets, then learn how to make shadow puppets of your own to help tell your own stories. Grades 2-5.

FRIDAY, JULY 22 (4-4:45 p.m.)

Fun Science Friday

Join Mrs. K as we explore the life cycle and habitat of an ant. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take-home project. Ages 4-6, up to Kindergarten.

SATURDAY, JULY 23

Illustration Creation (3-4 p.m.)

Learn about a featured illustrator and then create a project inspired by their art. Grades 1-3.

Art Walk (3-4:30 p.m.)

Enjoy a low impact walk in Clague Park and take nature photographs. Meet at the parking lot off Roman Lane, closest to the pond. Dress for the weather and bring water! The library will provide devices for participants. You may use your own camera, phone, or other device, if you prefer. Photography will be featured in the library gallery in September 2022. For adults with disabilities, and caregivers.

Registration is required for all programs and begins one week prior to each unless otherwise stated. To find more information or the blogs visit westlakelibrary.org/steam-week.
