Community invited to learn about proper tree care
The “Branching Out Together” community event on Tuesday, March 12, will present a panel of ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) arborists and industry professionals sharing the correct steps for tree care and preservation.
Guest speakers include Nick Dios, Bay Village Tree Commission Chairperson, explaining how to choose a tree care company that is right for your property. Chadwick Clink from Bartlett Tree Experts will present best practices regarding oak wilt and general tree care. James Lassiter from Cleveland Metroparks will discuss community forestry.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about their tree-related issues. Information and handouts on various urban forestry and canopy conservation topics will also be available.
The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Bay Village Police Department, 28000 Wolf Road. The event is open to the public. Seating may be limited. Light refreshments will be served.
“Branching Out Together” is hosted by the Bay Village Tree Commission and the Bay Village Service Department. The presentation will be held in place of the regular Tree Commission meeting, which are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The Bay Village Tree Commission consists of five members, all residents of the city, and with experience and/or extensive knowledge of shade trees. The mission of the Tree Commission is “To work as a team with Bay Village city officials preserving, fortifying and improving our urban forest.”
The Tree Commission is focused on increasing public awareness about how caring for and planting new trees today benefits all Bay Village residents.
The City of Bay Village has an Urban Forestry Manager, Dave Robinson, and two full time City Arborists responsible for assessing and maintaining trees on city property, including "street trees" on residential tree lawns.
In 2023, the City of Bay Village celebrated 25 years of its designation as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, an honor that has been awarded to the city continuously since 1998.To qualify as a Tree City USA community, a city must meet four standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.
In addition to the Tree City USA designation, Bay Village has also received 4 Tree City USA Growth Awards (in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021) and is on track to receive another award for 2023. The Tree City USA Growth Award is presented by the Arbor Day Foundation to participating Tree City USA communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care and community engagement.
An Arbor Day celebration is planned for June 1, 2024. Activities will include demonstrations on proper tree planting procedures, mulching, pruning, and information on pests and other tree-related topics. Additional details will be provided prior to the event.
