Saying goodbye to a familiar face

Friday, Sept. 5, marked the end of an era for the Westlake Recreation Center as longtime employee Brenda Larion retired. After 16 years at the center, it was time for Brenda to join her husband in retirement.

Brenda came to the City of Westlake from the North Olmsted Board of Education in 1998. Brenda was hired as the original front desk manager where she remained for over a dozen years. The past several years Brenda has downsized and was acting as the Recreation Department’s finance guru. If you wanted something, Brenda was the person you had to go through.

During her years of service, Brenda always had a smile on her face and brought that energy to not only the Recreation Center but to City Hall where she was often seen spreading her cheer from department to department. Her daily “run” allowed her to go to the golf course, bank, city hall and, during the summer, even Peterson Pool.

Nate Cullinan and Shawn Sovie, juniors at Bay High and Lakewood High School respectively, placed a close second in the Kiwi division of a weeklong sailing regatta held in Long Beach, California. Strapless Dresses: A hands-free, slip-free tutorial

From the steady stream of graduation and wedding invitations rolling in, to the promise of vacations on far-away beaches (or Lake Erie), the strapless dress is the ultimate warm-weather party attire. It can be cute and flirty, or elegant and sexy. Cut it short for day-time festivities, or long for an evening wedding.

Unfortunately, all strapless dresses have an ever-present peril: that of unwanted slippage, as the dress, free of sleeved support, tends to creep down, down, down. But falter not, oh members of the fairer sex!; for we have a secret used by our sisters of days gone by: boning.

Metal boning, to be precise. Ever wondered how Elizabeth I, Marie Antoinette, and Scarlet O’Hara did it? How those seemingly impossible dresses kept their shape as yards and yards of fabric poured off them every which way? The truth is they couldn’t have, not without some serious support holding them up.

Sea Scouts perform important service to boaters

There was orange smoke and red flares at Bay Boat Club on May 27 but it was not an emergency. The Bay Sea Scouts collected almost 100 expired pyrotechnic visual distress flares and, with the approval of the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities, ignited them as a training exercise.

The U.S. Coast Guard requires most boats over 16 feet in length to carry at least three flares. The flares have expiration dates stamped on them and after three years are no longer legal and considered hazardous waste. Due to their toxic composition they should not be disposed of in the regular trash.

I decided to find out and on an unusually warm winter day I began a walking journey that has continued these past 10 years. The monthly walks from May to November have taken me to interesting neighborhoods and beautiful parks throughout northeast Ohio with the added bonus of meeting a wonderful group of new friends.

Bay baseball 60th anniversary celebration and dedication

Saturday, April 26, was a beautiful day for high school baseball. Bay Rockets Varsity and JV teams played on home fields against Avon Lake, immediately following a field dedication and 60th anniversary commemoration ceremony of Bay Men's Baseball.

As Stewart Watterson, director of Bay Men's Club Baseball, stated: "We are really celebrating two milestones today. One is the recognition of the 60th anniversary of Bay Men's Baseball. This is a volunteer group which has been organizing the City's recreational baseball leagues for boys 7 to 18 years old since 1954. The program has stayed true to its goal of 'every kid who wanted to play ball was given the chance' by never turning a boy away for lack of fees or equipment. These are always provided when needed by the families of our community. Several of our volunteers are in attendance today, some of which have served for 30 plus years!

Bay Sea Scouts explore new winter sport

On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Sea Scouts headed to the Sandusky Ice Yacht Club (SIYC) to meet the Commodore, Nick Vitale, and several other iceboaters. The purpose of the trip was to check out the ice conditions first hand on Sandusky Bay and to learn about iceboating.

The rain the previous day washed out the snow mounds on the bay and the cold temperature that night resulted in a bumpy but almost perfect sailing ice surface. There was an ice thickness of 16-30 inches. This depth of ice assured us that it would be safe and would be in place for several weeks to come.
