On May 2 Westlake voters will be asked to approve a 2.8 mill operating levy renewal and an additional 0.6 mills for Westlake Porter Public Library. The current levy, which provides 70% of the library’s operating funds, expires at the end of the year. Passage will ensure library funding for the five-year period of Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2028. The current operating levy millage has been in place for 15 years.
Currently the levy is the library’s primary source of operating funds, providing materials (books, magazines, digital/downloadable/streaming materials), resources (computers, software, digital databases, etc.), staffing, program support, supplies, and building operations (maintenance and utilities). The other major source of funding is the state’s Public Library Fund (PLF).

It has become increasingly difficult to manage Portables on a volunteer basis and, unfortunately, the economics do not support a paid position to take over management of the shop.
Portables Gift Shop will have a Going Out of Business sale, beginning Jan. 2, 2023; the shop will offer a 50% discount on all items from Monday, Jan. 2, through Sunday, Jan. 8. The discount percentage will increase weekly until closing, either Jan. 31 or when all items are sold, whichever comes first.

Westlake Porter Public Library held a ceremony on Monday, Sept. 24, to commemorate the groundbreaking of its new outdoor programming pavilion and the refurbishing of study and collaborative spaces in its Adult Services section.
Site work has begun on the approximately 2,000-square-foot outdoor programming pavilion which will provide additional space for all types of programming and events. Improvements to the Adult Services area include remodeling three existing study rooms, adding two new small group study rooms which can accommodate up to four people each, improved lighting, new carpet, and new furnishings. Both projects are expected to be completed by mid-November of this year.
The projects are a result of a strategic and space planning process the library completed in 2021, including feedback solicited from the community during public sessions and through surveys. The construction costs of approximately $900,000 will be paid for from the library’s Permanent Improvement Fund, which are funds specifically set aside for projects such as these, and $110,000 received in donations, including a generous contribution toward the pavilion from the Friends of Porter Public Library in honor of their 50th anniversary.

Westlake Porter Public Library’s Board of Trustees and Director dedicated two trees in a ceremony at the library on Wednesday, June 15. The trees replaced two of those lost in 2019 during the city’s Center Ridge Road widening project.
One replaced a tree originally donated in memory of the daughter of former Board President Tom Fox, Linda Fox Lustenberger, who died in 1992. The other was provided by the Herb Guild Garden Club in partnership with the library as their part of the Holden Forest and Gardens’ People for Trees initiative, which aims to have more than 15,000 trees planted in our region by 2025.
Both trees are “Autumn Brilliance” Serviceberry trees, which are native to Ohio, fast growing, and can be 15 to 20 feet tall at maturity. The trees will offer year-round interest with spring blooms, summer berry fruit for birds to enjoy and brilliant fall foliage. They are located on the library lawn facing Center Ridge Road.

Westlake Porter Public Library has passed its recent audit, which means auditors found no weaknesses or deficiencies in the library’s financial management and record-keeping. In addition, the library was found to be in compliance with the laws, regulations, contracts and other agreements it is required to meet. This continues the library’s longstanding record of successful audits.
“I am not at all surprised by this result,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “Our Finance Department works very hard to make sure the library is a good steward of the funds entrusted to us by the community, and the rest of the staff do a great job following the fiscal procedures Finance has put in place.”

Barb Gauthier received the 2022 Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award from Westlake Porter Public Library at a special ceremony preceding the April 20 board meeting. The award is given annually to the volunteer who best demonstrates the spirit of volunteerism exemplified by its namesake, Myrna Chelko.
Gauthier joined the Friends of Porter Public Library in January 2021. When the long-time Portables Gift Shop manager decided to step down, she almost immediately expressed an interest in taking over. Gauthier began managing Portables shortly after meeting with the outgoing manager, and in her first year of running Portables the store netted over $21,000! It is due to Gauthier stepping in and maintaining the excellent quality of merchandise and service that Portables is known and loved for that it still exists.
Myrna Chelko was a long-time library volunteer who was known for her dedication to the library and her hard work. She helped found the Friends of Porter Public Library 50 years ago (1972), and her many volunteer services include being an officer of that group and a Library Board member.
